Express Entry is Canada’s primary system for managing applications for permanent residency under three federal economic immigration programs. If you’re a skilled worker looking to make Canada your home, understanding how Express Entry works is the essential first step.

What is Express Entry?

Launched in January 2015, Express Entry is an online immigration system used by IRCC to manage applications for permanent residency from skilled workers. It covers three federal programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

How Does the CRS Work?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. Points are awarded based on age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and additional factors such as a provincial nomination or a valid job offer. The maximum CRS score is 1,200 points.

Key Steps to Apply

  1. Take an approved language test (IELTS or CELPIP for English; TEF or TCF for French)
  2. Get your Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign degrees
  3. Create your Express Entry profile online
  4. Receive your CRS score and enter the candidate pool
  5. Improve your score through provincial nominations, job offers, or language upgrades
  6. Receive an ITA and submit your complete PR application within 60 days
